FACEBOOK HIRES TOP GOOGLE ENGINEER TO DESIGN A SILICON CHIPS
According to a Bloomberg report, Facebook has hired Google’s lead chip developers, Shahirer Rabi, to help the social network in its ongoing effort to design their own silicon chips.
Earlier this year, Facebook expressed hope on the chip-developing bandwagon, when they started making a team that could design custom chips for power servers and consumer hardware.
Rabi’s new role on Facebook will be as a vice president and chief of silicon. It’s a move that’s on trend with other tech giants, many of which are bringing chip design in-house rather than relying on big-name suppliers like Intel and Qual comm.
Apple has been creating its own custom processors for iOS devices for nearly a decade. It has designed custom single purpose chips for artificial intelligence and other tasks in recent years.
The i Phone maker is also reportedly planning on using its own chips to replace the Intel processors for their Mac computers by 2020.
Earlier this year, Amazon reportedly Echo embarked on a new initiative to design its won chips specifically to help power AI features for it line of smart speakers.
Custom chips can also be used to better train the AI algorithms that Facebook has patented their site for hate speech, fake accounts and potentially hazardous material.
Right now, the company uses revised third-party GPUs from companies like Nvidia. Designing your own AI training server with proprietary chips, because Google does it with its tensor processing units, a very difficult problem to use AI instead of human eyes can help in the continuous growing platform of the police.
